Course content
From orbit to the ground floor — and back. A journey through the numbers that run every business.
This is a structured, supported journey through the financial and commercial concepts that matter most in business — led by an experienced guide, not a textbook. No prior knowledge required. No judgment. Just clarity.
The course is structured as a choose-your-own-adventure story, where you play all the key roles.
Session 1
-
Edge of space: Orientation - first principles
-
The investor’s trilemma: scarcity, uncertainty and the cost of doing nothing.
-
-
100,000 feet: Buy a business
-
Build the P&Ls for two competing businesses,
-
Then decide which one to buy, based on numbers and narrative.
-
You'll be hands-on from the start.
Session 2
-
50,000 feet: Discover the acquired business needs a transformative investment
-
Can you afford it? (Surprise! You’re the CEO now.)
-
Build your balance sheet, to assess your capacity to invest.
-
Learn about capitalisation and depreciation.
-
Stress test the business case for the investment, using scenario analysis.
-
Make the investment decision.
-
Confront the opportunity costs that will need managing.
-
We'll demystify finance jargon together.
Between sessions 2 and 3
-
1,000 feet: Your investors and staff expect you to hold the line on profits during the transformation.
-
Standing still is going backwards: cash deployed as capital expenditure (capex) is no longer earning interest.
-
Review options to shore up your P&L.
-
Review the full-year budget your exec team have assembled.
-
Get ready to run!
-
You'll face into real-world dilemmas and make informed decisions.
You'll navigate complex financials with confidence.
Session 3
-
Ground level: You’re in the game, it’s halftime, and it's not pretty.
-
Halfway through the financial year, results are looking ugly.
-
Review the P&L line by line to understand the drivers of the result - and who to hold accountable.
-
Lead a sales reforecast to understand how much you’ll need to cut to make profit.
-
Solve for profitability by making hard calls.
-
-
Finally, back to orbit. Take stock and reflect on:
-
What and who the numbers are for.
-
How you used them and why.
-
The stories they told - the truths and the lies.
-

"In several meetings today, there was mention of 'budget', 'capex', 'opex' and cost allocation. It's the first time I actually followed along, genuinely understanding, instead of trying to look like I understand whilst freaking out internally."
